About Christian Culture Festival

Christian Culture Festival was organized for the first time in 1997 on 10th Anniversary of the Logos Theatre. In a sense, it extends the idea of Christian Culture Weeks organized in Poland in 70s and 80s of the last century, which were to become counterpoise to lay media model promoted by the State. Lodz Christian Culture Days were organized in churches all around the city, so as to accommodate the artists, spectacles, exhibitions and projections.

One of such places was the John Paul lecture theatre in the vault of the Assumption of Holy Mother Church in Kościelna Street. This is where the Logos Theatre started, before it was moved to the church in Maria Skłodowska-Curie. It was this church that Archbishop Władysław Ziółek gave to the Lodz artists in 1993, and in which the Centre of Creative Communities’ of Lodz Archdiocese was appointed. It is here that the ‘logistic’ centre of the Festival is located, and where some of the Festival events take place.

Traditionally, the Festival takes place in November, on the first Sunday after All Soul’s Day. It usually lasts for two weeks, during which various event take place – spectacle premiers, other theatres come to Lodz, there are exhibitions of invited artists, performances of choirs and musicians, very often not to be seen anywhere else in Poland at any other time. The Festival programme is the result of the whole year’s work of rev. Waldemar Sondka, the Festival Director, who – using his contacts – invites artists who are interesting, out of the ordinary, noteworthy and creating art perhaps not always religious, but always searching and at the highest level. Care for the level of the Festival offers is a permanent rule, the Logos environment has always wished to provide the Lodz citizens with the possibility of contact with art deprived of parochialism, open to the man and as perfect formally as possible.

The Festival is not an activity that brings profit. Any entrance cards are issued as invitations that are free of charge, and the team of the Logos Theatre and all the people engaged in the Festival organization, act as volunteers. This does not mean that Christian Culture Festival costs nothing. On the contrary, to organize such a cultural event at appropriate level is always connected with costs. Rev. Waldemar Sondka deals with organizing means to secure the Festival events all year round. He manages to gain sponsors (without whom the Festival would not exist) and subsidies from institutions that deal with funding culture (without which the Festival could not develop). All that in order to realize the basic idea of the event that derived from the Lodz Christian Culture Days – to enable anyone who wishes and needs that, to live the Mystery through art. This idea assumes a free of charge participation in all the artistic events, which has been the case since the very beginning of the Festival until today, the only condition is that on the day of the Festival opening, one must queue as long as it takes to get invitations. The only limit to the number of invitations is the capacity of rooms in which the events are organized every day throughout the two weeks of the Festival.

Something happened in the Bavarian village of Straubing in the spring of 2004, which otherwise only rarely occurs there: an auditorium filled to the last seat celebrated a violinist, who just turned 15, with standing ovations. He had just competed for the prize for the next generation the festival “Jazz at the Danube”, which he then won convincingly.
The time came one year later. After the band had polished its program untiringly, worked out numerous pieces and arrangements and rehearsed them in front of audiences, they took the real “test” in the studio.

The recordings were made quasi “live” on two days. Overdubs or other technical “tricks” were completely superfluous. You can almost only recreate the experience of hearing the unbridled joy of playing and the technical brilliance of the musicians in “first takes”. Star violinist Roby Lakatos is also filled with enthusiasm for the recording: “Congratulations on this stunning mix of gypsy, jazz and classical music... great sound, great technique, great musicians.”

Roman Janoska

Roman Janoska was born in 1989 in Bratislava into a musical family, who noticed his talent during his early childhood. At the age of five he started to play on the violin, studying at the State Conservatory in Bratislava and later on continuing his studies at the Conservatory privat University of Music and performing Arts in Vienna in the Pavel Vernikov..s master class. Even at a very early age, Roman Janoska began winning prizes at various competitions: -international competition Presburg..s Paganini -international competition for young talents of Slovakia — Dolny Kubin -international competition Fidelio in Vienna -international competition for Jazz Violininist-Budapest Roman Janoska fascinates his audiences through his performances of Jazz. He is a member of the jazz quartet No Limit, which won a jazz competition in Straubing , Germany . This afforded him the opportunity to record a CD and participate in the international jazz festival “Jazz an der Donau” in Germany . Here he had the privilege of meeting famous musicians such as BB King, Roy Hargrove, George Benson, and others. Janoska and his quartet appeared at the festival in Getxo ( Spain ), alongside artists such as John Scofield and his trio. Recent projects of Roman Janoska include a Trio with Georg Breinschmid (double bass) and Roman’s brother, the pianist Frantisek Janoska. To his other performing in world projects for young jazz artist include the Visegrad 4 octet all night jazz project in Budapest or featuring in Vienna..s Philharmonic ball with the violinist Roby Lakatos. At the italian festival Portogruaro Roman Janoska took part in a concert for four violinists with Roby Lakatos, Alexej Igudesman and Pavel Vernikov. Roman Janoska performs regularly in various international concert halls as a classical and jazz violinist. He plays as a soloist and as a chamber musician, sharing the stage with internationally known artists and orchestras.

Franz Janoska

Franz Janoska was born in a musicist family in 1986,Bratislava. His environment has discovered his brilliant hearing.
He started his “career” as 5 years on the piano, while his brother was playing on Violin. He became a single student at State Conservatorium in Bratislava, his professor was Prof. Mgr. of Art Peter Cerman. He finished his studies with an examination in 2005. He’d performed some compositions too, what he has study at State Conservatorium in Prof. Juraj Tandler’s class. He also take a part on a piano concerto, and he was only 8. It was a honor to play with: Dezider Kardos (Banovce nad Bebravou — in 1994) and with Johann Neponuk Hummel (Bratislava — in 1995 & 1998).
The jury was rewarded him with an award & “Talent Revuca” nick name on a competiton. In 2002 he won the international Liszt Ferenc competition in Hungary, it was a signal success. In 2004 in Banska Bystrica he got the 1st place on a competition where were compete people from whole Slovakia.
His hobbies are jazz music, he is a member of a jazz quartet named No Limit.
He also make concerts in solo & with his brother. He was on tour with more theaters. At this time he is studying at Music & Performer School in Vienna.

Ernst Grieshofer

Born 1960 in Bad Aussee in Austria; autoditact , first instruments: flute , styrian concertina , clarinet , then drums (autoditact) learned glazier and glazier’s art , studied psychology and sociology , worked later as an musictherapist and musicteacher , plays in different Ensembles many different styles of music , from rockmusic over pop- , folk-, latin-, freejazz , classic a.m.m.

Julius Darvas was born 1976 in Konstanz, Germany.
He has begun his study at 8 years, and has got a certificate in 1997. He has finished his studies in 2004 at music university in Vienna.
He is a member of Vienna Cityoper Bohnenorchestra. In 2003 he has won the international jazz double bass competition award in Budapest, where the main judge was John Pattituci. He is also study Composition and play the bass until the 3 Familie-generation.
