About Christian Culture Festival
Christian Culture Festival was organized for the first time in 1997 on 10th Anniversary of the Logos Theatre. In a sense, it extends the idea of Christian Culture Weeks organized in Poland in 70s and 80s of the last century, which were to become counterpoise to lay media model promoted by the State. Lodz Christian Culture Days were organized in churches all around the city, so as to accommodate the artists, spectacles, exhibitions and projections.
One of such places was the John Paul lecture theatre in the vault of the Assumption of Holy Mother Church in Kościelna Street. This is where the Logos Theatre started, before it was moved to the church in Maria Skłodowska-Curie. It was this church that Archbishop Władysław Ziółek gave to the Lodz artists in 1993, and in which the Centre of Creative Communities’ of Lodz Archdiocese was appointed. It is here that the ‘logistic’ centre of the Festival is located, and where some of the Festival events take place.
Traditionally, the Festival takes place in November, on the first Sunday after All Soul’s Day. It usually lasts for two weeks, during which various event take place – spectacle premiers, other theatres come to Lodz, there are exhibitions of invited artists, performances of choirs and musicians, very often not to be seen anywhere else in Poland at any other time. The Festival programme is the result of the whole year’s work of rev. Waldemar Sondka, the Festival Director, who – using his contacts – invites artists who are interesting, out of the ordinary, noteworthy and creating art perhaps not always religious, but always searching and at the highest level. Care for the level of the Festival offers is a permanent rule, the Logos environment has always wished to provide the Lodz citizens with the possibility of contact with art deprived of parochialism, open to the man and as perfect formally as possible.
The Festival is not an activity that brings profit. Any entrance cards are issued as invitations that are free of charge, and the team of the Logos Theatre and all the people engaged in the Festival organization, act as volunteers. This does not mean that Christian Culture Festival costs nothing. On the contrary, to organize such a cultural event at appropriate level is always connected with costs. Rev. Waldemar Sondka deals with organizing means to secure the Festival events all year round. He manages to gain sponsors (without whom the Festival would not exist) and subsidies from institutions that deal with funding culture (without which the Festival could not develop). All that in order to realize the basic idea of the event that derived from the Lodz Christian Culture Days – to enable anyone who wishes and needs that, to live the Mystery through art. This idea assumes a free of charge participation in all the artistic events, which has been the case since the very beginning of the Festival until today, the only condition is that on the day of the Festival opening, one must queue as long as it takes to get invitations. The only limit to the number of invitations is the capacity of rooms in which the events are organized every day throughout the two weeks of the Festival.

Zakopower
One of the hottest music bands on the current Polish musical scene and the only one that has truly successfully combined Polish highland folk with contemporary sounds.
Sometimes labelled as folk rock, Zakopower escapes all manner of classification - their music, originally inspired by the Podhale Polish highlands musical tradition equally features rock aesthetics, clever use of electronics, drawing on jazz influences as well as incorporating African beats - the overall mix resulting in a truly unique, authentic and strong sound - fun, lively, infectious and instantly recognizable. Named after the highland town Zakopane situated in the Tatra mountains and founded by a phenomenal violinist Sebastian Karpiel Bulecka, the band is seen as one of Poland’s most popular bands ever. Their debut album "Music Hall" (2005) quickly reached gold status. They have been awarded numerous folk as well as various mainstream music awards in their native Poland, most notably the prestigious academy award Fryderyk in 2008 for best Polish ethno/folk album (for their second album "Na Siedem" featuring Nigel Kennedy’s guest performance) and have been nominated for the Best Polish Performer on MTV’s Europe Music Awards (2006). Their concert DVD released in 2009 received gold status for the best selling music DVD in the Polish music market and remains a bestseller.
Their interesting instrumentation includes violin, highland bass, bagpipes and highland flute. Unlike many ethno/folk inspired groups of today rather than unashamedly borrow from existing melodies, the band develop and present entirely new original compositions - an ingenious mix of traditional and modern- drawing on folk aesthetics and technique but yet allowing it to develop and expand and bringing it in tune with the 21st century - theirs is a truly creative and progressive approach to making music. This is music with rare truthfulness to it and masses of positive energy and it cuts through any language or cultural barriers, easily reaching and intriguing audiences from all backgrounds. Skilled musicians, known predominantly for the very highly charged energetic performances, they are a versatile ensemble with a vast and varied repertoire that delivers equally well at large outdoor shows as well as more intimate clubs and acoustic stages.
The band is made up of an eclectic group of musicians all bringing unique touch to this ingenious mix and is led by a phenomenal violinist Sebastian Karpiel Bulecka, recognized as the leading one of the young generation of the Podhale region - an extraordinarily gifted and intuitive musician, vocalist and instrumentalist, great showman and charismatic band leader praised by critics both for his skills on the violin as well as stage manner and natural ability to engage the audience.
The full line up includes:
Sebastian Karpiel-Bułecka - lead violin, lead vocals, bagpipes, highlanders flute
Bartłomiej Kudasik - viola, vocals
Wojciech Topa - violin, vocals
Józef Chyc - highland bass, vocals
Piotr Rychlec - keyboards, vocals
Tomasz Krawczyk - electric guitar
Dominik Trębski - trumpet, vocals
Michał Trąbski - electric bass
Łukasz Moskal - drums, vocals
All seasoned musicians, they have recorded and performed with Nigel Kennedy and Goran Bregovic, worked alongside renowned international musicians (Doug Boyle, Mamadou Diouf) as well as collaborated with leading musicians from the Polish popular scene (Kayah, Voo Voo, T.Love, Grzegorz Turnau and others) and the jazz scene (Nigel Kennedy Quintet, Robert Majewski, Zbigniew Namysłowski) They have amassed a great following in their native Poland and are steadily gaining a large fan base worldwide with fans demanding concerts from as far as US, New Zealand and Australia.
Predominantly a live performing band they tour extensively both in Poland and abroad, giving on average about 100 performances a year (having developed a somewhat legendary status with their shows unfailingly attracting large audiences of crazed fans, hysterical with euphoria) their touring schedule has so far taken them throughout Europe (including major festivals such as Rudolstadt, Sziget, Ostrava) Mocvara in Zagreb, Ancienne Belgique in Brussels as well as the US (NY, Chicago), the Far East (India, China) and even Africa (Morocco). Recently, they appeared in the exclusive line up of artists representing the very best of Poland at Nigel Kennedy’s Polish Weekend at the London’s prestigious SouthBank Centre, with their performance selling the Queen Elizabeth Hall, causing quite a stir and gaining them wide critical acclaim as well as significant interest from both British promoters and the media.
Their latest album "Boso (Barefoot)", which features more instrumental focus was released in May 2011. The audience welcomed it enthusiastically, as did the critics and journalists who gave the album great reviews. The album became a bestseller in Poland and quickly reached status of PLATINUM ALBUM. "Boso" the single was number one in most of polish radiostations.
